The Olgas (Kata-Tjuta)

The Northern Territory is the least populated state of Australia. The Olgas (Kata-Tjuta = many heads)* are located in the 'Red Centre', about 500km south of Alice Springs.
The Olgas are a maze of massive head-like rocks. They are one of the major attractions and should be part of every visit to this area.

Das Tal der Winde
The 'Valley of the Winds' is a major destination for the hikers visiting the Olgas. The walk can be done by almost everyone, however sturdy shoes, a hat and water are a must on this walk. Temperatures can be very high in this area.

Ayers Rock (Uluru)
Ayers Rock (Uluru)* is maybe the most famous symbol of Australia. It is located about 460km (6hr drive) southwest of Alice Springs. Direct flights to Ayers Rock are available from most major airports within Australia.
Uluru still is a sacred site for the Aborigines of the area. The land has been given back to the local tribe who leases it back to the government.
Best times to see the rock: Sunrise in the early morning and of course sunset.

Felsmalereien am Ayers Rock
There is a wonderful walk around the base of the rock. Rockpaintings are found in several places. A guided drive around the rock is also worth while.
The visitors centre near the Rock should be part of any trip to Uluru. It is a great place to see and buy authentic artwork of the local tribe (Note: No photos please!!)

Kings Canyon
One of the most beautiful attractions of the 'Red Centre' is Kings Canyon. Unfortunately most visitors miss out on it because they just don't know of its existance or they just don't have enough time to go there. Also a lot of coach tours give it a miss because it is off the main road.
Kings Canyon can easily be included in an extended trip to Ayers Rock and the Olgas.

Kings Canyon
Kings Canyon* is located about 330km southwest of Alice Springs. It offers spectacular scenery, 200m drops and crystal clear waterholes.
On the 4hr walk visitors have the chance to see the 'Lost City and the 'Garden of Eden' (left).
Accommodation is available near the Canyon.

Attractions on the way
Follow the Mereenie Loop (4WD only) to Palm Valley (permit required) in the Finke NP. See some of the oldest types of palm trees that survived only in this secluded valley. These palm trees are a leftover of the times when the centre of Australia was covered by a huge lake. Palm Valley
Standley Chasm

Another attraction is Standley Chasm. At its deepest point, the walls are about 75m high. In places the chasm is only about 5-9m wide. Colors range from red to brown depending on the light.

It is quite common to meet the 'Kings of the road' while travelling in the Outback. These Roadtrains can have as many as 4 trailers (29 axles).

Kakadu NP & Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk)
The Top End* has a wide variety of attractions to offer.
Maybe one of the strangest and scariest is the Jumping Crocodiles* on the Adelaide River. Watch this spectacular event behind bulletproof glass. Be eye-to-eye with one of these ancient creatures.

Kakadu National Park
The Kakadu National Park* is maybe one of the most famous parks in Australia. It is located in the tropical north of the continent. It has many wonderful places to visit, eg. Yellow Waters cruise at daybreak.
Here you can see the huge Estuarine Crocodiles and birds in their natural environment.

Further south you can find Nitmiluk NP* and Katherine Gorge. Take a guided boat cruise through the Gorge or rent a kajak and explore it on your own.
